Even though the 12-year-old kid who saved his brothers from a brutal dog attack also suffered injuries, he is being hailed and recognized as a hero for his bravery.
Deacon Ashmore, a sixth-grader, was taking his two sisters, his brother, and a group of friends on a stroll in their Detroit neighborhood when two vicious dogs suddenly charged up to them.
To shield his brothers from the oncoming hounds, Deacon stood in front of them without thinking.
The two dogs rushed towards other children playing outdoors, including Deacon’s five-year-old brother, his two sisters, who are now nine and seven, and other children.
Deacon intervened in front of them, allowing his brothers and other kids to flee, but as a result, he was mauled by the canines.
According to his mother Elisabeth Ashmore, who spoke to MSN News, Deacon „jumped in front of all the other kids and made sure they could get home extremely fast before the dogs caught them.“
One of the dogs got its jaws on Deacon’s leg, but he was able to fend it off by beating it until it released.
Fortunately, there were no broken bones, but his leg was severely hurt, with a visible bone and a lot of blood.
The main worry, according to his mother, was if there was any ligament or tendon damage.
His father said, „The injuries may have been far more terrible if it had been just a few millimeters in a different direction.“
Deacon was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where he had surgery to repair his dog bite wounds as well as tetanus and rabies shots.
He spent the night in the hospital before being let go the next day. For a few weeks, he was supposed to walk on crutches.
To assist the family in covering Deacon’s medical expenses, a GoFundMe campaign was launched.
More than $25,000 was raised. The attack that took place in May was this one.
Deacon’s father also noted that his son’s top priority throughout the attack was ensuring that his siblings returned home safely, displaying his selflessness and courage.
The event serves as a reminder of the value of proper dog ownership and the necessity to take legal action against owners who let their dogs go uncontrolled and perhaps cause harm to others.
